I want to think aloud. So everything I write down now, please note that I am just thinking aloud.
What happened to Arizona?
Why did she cheat on Callie? Does
she not love Callie anymore?
Was she not happy? Why did they get married in the first
place? Let's think and write down our thoughts.
Kids
True. She didn’t want to have kids. But when Gary Clark made
his explosive presence felt at SGMW, this changed. The fear of the fleetingness of life
brought them to share this dream.
When she went to Africa, Callie needed a palate cleanser and
got pregnant. I would have though they’d
have kids via adoption or surrogacy, but a baby by Mark was just not too
palatable, Mark is Callie’s sex buddy turned bestie. If I were Arizona, I’d be
really jealous. It’s good she was mature about it. When Callie was hurt in the car crash. It made Arizona accept the situation better.
This is not my life. This is not my dream.
She said it on that living room sofa, she drinking wine, and
the pregnant Callie drinking a glass of milk. Callie got it all. She had to
adjust to all that happened in Callie’s life and take all that came with
Callie. A child by Mark, Mark who’ll be there every step of the way from birth till
adulthood of Sofia, it was going to be a three-way relationship. She loved
Callie so much, and she left Africa for her, but this was one of the
most bitter pills she had to swallow, cause if u love a person, you accept
everything that she is and everything she comes with.
It was a take it or leave it situation and Arizona accepted everything because she loved Callie. But we don’t really know if she was happy.
Marriage
Ever since Callie got pregnant with Mark’s baby, Arizona was
jealous. She just did not dwell on it a lot, because of her sunshiny
personality. Certain situations though,
pushed this jealousy to the foreground,
mainly during the baby shower, where she slowly realized Mark and Callie are
much more compatible.
That Mark gets Callie better: the Catholic Callie, the
Callie who liked onesie decorating with glitter pens, among others.
So on the road to the B&B, when Mark sends text messages to
Callie, Arizona’s jealousy came to a head. Here they were, about to spend
some alone time together and Mark was still there, invading their privacy. I wonder if Arizona really wanted them to get
married for the reason of having a true commitment, or only because she was driven
by jealousy and wanted to safeguard her position in Callie’s life, and have the
upper hand against Mark.
Was that marriage proposal just an attempt at an ego boost? And Callie, when asked by
Arizona , was not even eager at first about the marriage. Short of saying she thought it
was preposterous, then just got slowly
convinced.
Callie said she wants that, the rings, etc., and before she could answer, the truck came out
of nowhere. And then they all sang the day away.
Then came the issue of the leg. She blamed Callie for
cutting off her leg, when Callie just had it done to save her life. I hope the
writers get more creative when thinking of conflict story lines for them. The writers always come up with very good drama . They could work wonders out of boring technical situations, I hope they can do even better than this. Something more realistic and acceptable for Callie and Arizona.
All through Season 9, it was up and down and up and down for
Calzona:
First Arizona said Callie was "outstanding" (9x02).
Then she was so mad at
Callie blaming her for cutting off her leg.
Then she was short with Callie most of the time while adjusting to one leg.
Then she was okay with Callie, who was so patient and
supportive of her.
Then she asked Callie not to run when Callie made a joke to Bailey to be a runaway bride.
Then she was irritable with Callie when Callie led the Grey
Sloan buyout initiative.
Then she was guilty that she wasn’t able to have sex with
Callie so they finally did.
Then she was supportive of Callie in her TED speech.
Then she met Whoren and Boom.
Up and down, erratic behavior in Season 9. I don’t want to
think that the writers have become random with their stories that continuity of
thought and situation have been sacrificed.
Maybe this is how
PTSD is. Inconsistent erratic behavior on Arizona’s part. We the viewers were led into this roller coaster
of emotions of Arizona. Callie was consistent all the way.
What led to Arizona’s inconsistency? Did she
love Callie? Was she happy? She said it was not her dream. But she was sucked
into it because of the many tragedies that came their way, leading both of them to make
rushed decisions.
Were they really meant to be? Or are we all just too excited to
have the most popular lesbian couple on primetime tv and could not care less whether
the story thread that brought them together and apart is disjointed? Will Grey's Anatomy finally correct the wrongs,
tie up the loose ends of the Calzona
Story and come up with a more cohesive plot line? I hope so.
I hope they give us what we deserve. A plausible story of
Arizona’s journey of truth, of realizations, self discovery. If she made a
mistake, it’s all right. The deed has been done. But we need to know what led
her to do this.
If it was PTSD, I hope they explain it well. But I really
hope that they do not justify the cheating just from PTSD. It is acceptable
that PTSD is a major contributing factor
but it cannot totally justify the cheating.
We look forward to how the writers will explain all
this. Up to now, we seriously question
Arizona’s actions, when she was supposed to be the Good Man in a Storm with a
good moral compass, and whom we all look up to.
Also, this is why we understand Callie, who did not go to couple’s therapy with Arizona. Betrayal is a very serious, painful thing, and it is a big
question if they will be able to ever get back together after this.
