Good and Ready

Calzona Review   Greys Anatomy 13x03 "I Ain't No Miracle Worker"

Note: Would rather not dwell on saying how i never thought i would watch Greys again after Sara left.

Not going to talk either about how painful 12x24 was that I could not muster enough guts to write a recap and review after knowing that Sara Ramirez was to take a time off and thereby  the Calzona story was placed on its own indefinite hiatus.

Deep  reflection during Greys  hiatus made me decide that I had to choose to look at the bigger picture. Glass half-full.  To think positive and be happy that Arizona was still on Greys.

Just the thought that  Arizona was to be back in 13x03 was enough incentive.

No regrets  watching  it because  this episode had lots of Arizona screen time and it was a pretty amazing episode. Leading me to conclude that in spite of the loss of major characters that we had always loved, Greys will still be the amazing tv show it has always been.

If ever any or all of my succeeding reviews bend toward the slant of : 'everything that happens  will lead Calzona back to each other’s arms,' please let it be because even until now, I’m still a firm believer that they are endgame. Label me mad but until the very last episode of the series, this will always be my belief.

Change is good, yeah, but after all is said and done, there will always be things that are meant to be. And Calzona are that, exactly. Meant to be.

Review:

This episode, which for a lot of Calzona followers was the real Greys premiere,  was an episode on forgiveness and miracles.

Forgive my Calzona heart that when ‘forgiveness’ and ‘miracles’ are mentioned, the only things I think about are Calzona and "if only's".

If only Callie were here, this would have been great SL fodder for the Calzona story. Callie and Arizona had been through forgiveness countless times with each other, and this last one had been the most touching and significant.

The only thing that one can truly wish for right now is for the miracle of love to bring Callie and Arizona back together.

See? It's  easy to relate everything dramatic and miraculous with Calzona..if only…

Happy for Sofia and Callie

Arizona Robbins is  back!

The first two episodes of Greys were admittedly  entertaining but having Arizona back was simply a breath of the freshest air imaginable.

Establishing her refreshing presence this season, Arizona was in elegant red, striding gracefully through Grey Sloan Memorial. Wingman Webber was her first greeter.

And wonder of wonders, in their welcome back banter about her absence from the hospital scene, her mention of "Callie" would be enough to grab your heart and make it  weep (out of joy and a little longing). Let me repeat, her first line of the season involved mention of Callie and her new place and how Sofia is.

Asked by Webber how New York was,  it was a happy sight to see Arizona excitedly gush,
“Callie's got this huge place near the park and Sofia's got this huge room all to herself. She loves her new school.”

She was genuinely happy for Callie and content that Sofia would have a fine environment in New York.

It was obvious that she was contented where she was now, ripe for new happiness.

Woman in the Middle

What makes her true character stand out in this episode is that she did not choose sides in the Alex Karev- Andrew DeLuca imbroglio.

Caught between Alex Karev, her student whom she trained and groomed to be the outstanding peds surgeon that he is, and her current roommate Andrew Deluca,  who had a violent face off while Arizona was away, she chose to understand both but not mincing words on her true emotions about the tussle.

Studying Arizona's attitude toward the two, we can’t be more impressed.

Seeing Deluca’s badly beaten face  as he greeted her upon her arrival, evidently aroused dual emotion from Arizona. Her heart fell at Deluca’s injured plight and this interspersed with the thought that her student Alex Karev was capable of causing severe physical injury on a colleague.

As expected, Karev  got the no-holds-barred dressing down from her , repeatedly reminding him, "your job is to take care of children,”  with the main gist being “ you can’t throw your life away..."

Her anger emanating from all her effort and hard work in grooming Karev her ward, in whom she saw and unearthed  great potential when Karev's talent was overshadowed by his brusque personality and personal problems.

Karev, having been scolded by everyone who cared, was at wits end when Arizona confronted him and brushed off her reprimand.

Arizona had been so used to having the able hands of Karev in the peds department that she felt his absence greatly during the work day.. Arizona had been lamenting his absence as it was a loss to the department and at the same time, she had been feeling the anger toward Alex as to how bad the damage he caused Deluca, including the emotional trauma.

Let us not forget that even if Arizona was expressive about her anger at Alex's misdeed and she surely made it known to him, she was secretly  questioning why  Alex’s offense  was charged as a felony, as compared to Owen who did not even receive any legal complaints when he had his own fistfight with Riggs.

Arizona was  still  supportive of  Karev but she did not dare show him that she was.  She was angry, and she had to let it pass. Especially that pediatric patients were affected by this benching of a brilliant surgeon, ( Alex was not suspended by Bailey but was assigned to the Denny Duquette Clinic).

Having had a patient that day where the mother and child were heavily at risk but thankfully survived, she had to blurt out in quiet anger, "That baby deserved the best peds surgeon and we didn’t have him because you screwed up."
In the end however, Arizona told it like it is to Alex. “I missed you today but I’m still really , really mad at you.”

Alex: I know. Me too.
In parallel, Arizona was  compassionate toward the aggrieved Deluca, her fairly new roommate.
Deluca seemed almost sure he was going to get kicked out by Arizona because of what happened, mainly because Arizona was Karev's teacher and close friend.

He knew that in terms of relationships, he would be of "lesser value" to Arizona and  would be easy to get rid of because of this issue. But he was wrong.

Arizona did not  irrationally judge Deluca. As Deluca requested that he be allowed to move out later due to  hospital bills that set him back because of sustained injury, Arizona shushed him and made like she had no such  thoughts whatsoever. She actually touchingly gave Deluca a hearfelt hug that surprised Deluca. He never thought Arizona would still welcome him or even be concerned for him in this way.

Showing compassion to Deluca and giving Karev the rightful scolding yet still rooting for him and believing in him just speaks so much about how Arizona had developed as a character and person. Being the good man in the storm that she is, the true essence of her person comes forth in full view.

Arizona Teaches Her Patient Forgiveness

The scenario of Arizona witnessing   a family reconciliation in which she played an important part in sharing advice on forgiveness was beautiful.

Arizona’s  patient, Cara was a prodigal daughter to the beleaguered family and was the one who caused the funeral accident that kept the Emergency wing busy that day.  Arizona lent her wisdom from experience. She had gone through  her own challenges and has weathered them. She knew that forgiveness existed and was possible.

“Cara, she'll forgive you. Your mom will always forgive you no matter how bad it gets. You should try.”

She gave Cara hope. She knew she had to share what worked for her. Forgiveness was possible.
Even if Wilson did object to how she kept Cara's hopes up.

Arizona still ever so clear, had her ready answer. "Geez, Wilson. Have a little faith."

In the end,  Arizona was right.  The family members had forgiven one another.

Arizona being able to act in such a manner throughout all her interactions in this episode just   shows that Arizona is clear about herself, her principles and relationships with people.

Her journey through happiness and turmoil and tragedy had made her the strong, firm but compassionate and caring person that she is right now.

This episode which i loudly laud as Arizona-ful,  has set the stage for an Arizona who is clear and ready. The process of making herself whole has reached its fruition and now the time is ripe for her to receive  happiness she deserves.

She may have had her flaws in the past but the good man in the storm has weathered her storms-- triumphantly. She now stands firmly ready to claim her happiness.

Of course we want her to be with Callie in the end but for now that Sara had left for a time off, i would like to be unselfish and would like for Arizona to be happy.

In 12x24, she had been altruistic and self-sacrificing for Callie to be happy, it's about time she gets her own happiness too.

Not saying goodbye to Calzona, but since they are on pause, i would not want  that to hinder me from witnessing adventures to be had by Arizona. She deserves love and happiness as a character.
And i as audience, would want to relish the eventual fun times with her.

She will find new love and in Jessica's recent interviews, she hinted that it would be fun and exciting.

It surely won’t be bad  to get excited with her. Even if scenes with the new love will turn out hot, yeah sure. It is all right to  enjoy what is here and existing.

No use moping when all of the actors and even characters are enjoying and have moved on.
We as viewers deserve to be happy too.

Here's to happiness. They chose happiness. Then so should we.

So now i take a deep breath and whisper to myself, even if honestly it still hurts,  'Yeah I’m ready for Arizona to find a new love. I want her happy.'

Anyway, in the end, we know who really are Mint To Be.
