Human Rainbow

Calzona Review  Greys Anatomy 13x09  "You Haven't Done Nothin'"

The romance game is on. The hard-to-get game is on too. Many kinds of games are on and we need to call everything under the umbrella name: Flirting game.

This was too much of a tension-filled winter finale episode of Greys Anatomy. One of the most heart wrenching and heart breaking because of sustained injuries of the patients, the heartbreaking struggle for composure of their families and havoc in the doctor's personal lives.

There were a couple of  shining light moments  in between  though. And these were courtesy of Arizona and Eliza. The new budding love pairing to watch.

Grey Sloan Memorial was jolted by an emergency. A building had collapsed which resulted in a multiple  casualty situation so it was 'all hands on deck' at the hospital.

It was a fitting first day of  work for new residency program boss Eliza Minnick who was due for work the week after, but used her surgical privileges, suited up and got busy and lent a helping hand to the  Grey Sloan crew.

Oh and yes, she did get busy, too getting her flirt game on with Doctor Arizona Robbins.

Yep. That same woman with whom she managed to make  her initial elevator-flirting step last episode.

Winning

Eliza was true to her word. Arizona Robbins' name attached to that face was one she could not easily forget.

Arizona was treating a  patient, a casualty from the collapsed building incident. And Eliza was there to assist.

Little did we know that this first scene would be so highly electric right from the very first second that we saw Arizona and Eliza  in the same frame.

Arizona: Hey, I need some oxygen over here
Eliza: O2 is right here
Arizona: Lungs are clear . Okay, make a fist with your toes. Tight tight tight....Good job.
Eliza: Wow haven't seen that one before
Arizona: Slow deep breaths. It just distracts them. It's your first day?
Eliza: Sort of. Just jumping in where I can.
Arizona: Well, welcome.
Eliza: Thanks, Dr Robbins. Errmm, told you i wouldn't forget.
Arizona: Forget?
Eliza: Your name
Arizona: Huh?
Eliza: You don't remember.
Arizona: No
Eliza: Wow okay forget it. I just... last time i saw you, i said that you had a name i couldn't forget. So I thought...
Arizona: I'm sorry I don't
Eliza: Forget it
Arizona (to patient): Did you see that? Did you see me winning?

You guessed it. They were the only cheery part of this dreary, heavy episode. Amidst all the sadness all around the hospital, the Elizona scenes were comic and romantic relief.

Knew it, Arizona was flattered by Minnick's last line in that elevator scene in 13x07.  We can now confirm that it was indeed a flirty advance by Minnick, and  Arizona did take note. But like the dating pro that she is, (obviously she's had lots of practice in this department the past months), she was not going to give in too easily. She knows all too well how the game is played.

For the longest time, we had not seen Arizona with any romantic scenes. Sure she had a make up love scene with Callie but that was it. And this was eons ago.

Seeing Arizona feigning ignorance of  Eliza's advances, and knowing that she was enjoying playing hard-to-get is a  fun and gratifying thing to experience.
Deep inside of us, we know that if there is one person who deserves romantic happiness right now, it's definitely Arizona.

I was practically laughing out loud when Arizona treated it as a romance flirting game when she said "Did you see me winning?"

And she was winning. It was important not to fatten up Eliza's ego by letting her in on the fact that she was interested in her  too. Pretending to forget how Eliza flirted with her last time, somehow gave her leverage in the romance game. She wanted to be chased.

 She Has Game

So when they crossed paths in the hospital hall once again, she  expected extra attention from Eliza,  but which she initially didn't get.

Arizona obviously wanted a follow up conversation so she had to make the first move...

Arizona: Hey how's the kid? The hyperventilating kid?
Eliza: Fine.  I like girls.
Arizona: Oh. Okay.

Eliza: I mean i feel like  you can't tell or something that I like women. I'm flirting with you? You're not getting it I'm really good at this. I have game. Which means either  you're not into women and  the world is upside down bonkers because I know,  or you're not into me and im totally deluding myself
Arizona: No. No You're not deluding yourself.
Eliza: I'm not?
Arizona: No. I'm a human rainbow. And you do. You got a lot of game. You have a very sexy...something something going on believe me...but there's a thing about you that bugged me. You walk around like you own the place. It's annoying.

Eliza: Hmmm, it's charming. You wanna grab a drink sometime?
Arizona: See? That! That is what I mean. No cause I don't wanna grab a drink with you
Eliza: Yes. Yes you do.
Arizona: Shut up. Fine, I'll drink with you.

Eliza: And I promise, you will not regret it.
Arizona: Go away.
(Smiling to herself)

See, any person who roots for any lesbian relationship in any tv show     would giggle with delight at this hilarious flirting scene.

I'm sorry but it was truly, truly refreshing. It was funny. Fresh. Exciting. Cute.
When was the last time we ever saw Arizona's face genuinely light up with glee like this? Lauren times? Yes Virginia, that was four seasons ago.

Eliza reignited something in her and she was up to speed with the flirting.

Eliza was straightforward in her advances but Arizona was not reacting reciprocally.

She actually even slightly doubted for a second if Arizona was lesbian.

They were funny whenever Arizona tried so hard to show she wasn't interested, and even funnier when she couldn't keep up her act. She did give in with little effort from Eliza.

Eliza is smitten with our girl Arizona, confidently asked her for a date with a guarantee that she wont regret it. Take note that Eliza was confident Arizona would accede to her invitation. And i guess Arizona likes her girls aggressive.

Arizona was liking this. She chose to not show it but she was definitely enjoying  Eliza's attention and interest.

Analysis

After howling with laughter and after calming my overwhelmed heart from the Elizona cuteness, I must admit i personally enjoyed their scenes to the hilt. It felt good. Sooo good i felt like a traitor.

Of course i know whom i really ship but this cuteness was getting the best of me. How can someone who has been waiting four long seasons for electric lesbian unadulterated interaction, resist the adorable Elizona flirting and chasing game ? We are human, we like happiness. And this did set our hearts a-flutter.

I look forward to several more episodes of cuteness. As I said previously, the beginnings of any relationship are the best moments.

What's next?

Just thinking... What's next after the cuteness? Will it be sexiness? I can just imagine the steam involved when these two get together. I'm sure ready for the hotness.

But after the sexiness, what is next? That is the big question because to be blunt about it, Arizona's happy ending is with Callie and no one else.  That's clear.

After digesting all the happiness,  it was necessary to analyze two things in this romantic scenario :

1) balance of power and 2) personality compatibility between Arizona and Eliza.

We noticed Eliza's aggressiveness. Judging by her demeanor at the hospital, she seems headstrong,  intense. She gets her way.  This didn't escape Arizona's attention. She said so herself that it bugged her how Eliza walks around like she owns the hospital. Let us remind one another that Arizona is actually part owner of the hospital, lest the writers forget. So nope, she isn't impressed much by Eliza's ego but maybe a bit challenged by this newcomer's confidence. Eliza labels it as charming, though.

Arizona is the type who stands her ground. She won't be a pushover that's for sure. And the way she has been controlling the chase, yes, i am keen on their relationship having a good balance.

Personality-wise, both are strong-willed, straightforward, aggressive. From what we have seen so far, they seem to have several similar personality traits which is why there is that undefinable instant attraction.

Don't ask me where the undeniable electricity between them comes from, that comes naturally.

Not being pessimistic but having similar personalities may prove disadvantageous in the end. I'm not sure how it will all pan out but it's not wise to get ahead of anything for now, so let's just see how it goes.

For now, It's practical to stay in the rainbow bubble of Elizona happiness. It's an excitement we had not felt in a very long time. Although of course our first option for this kind of  interaction with Arizona would be Callie, we make do with what we have. Every little happiness and any excitement that they dish out, would rather choose to be grateful.

Allowing ourselves a little happiness is better than not experiencing any at all.

All for Arizona happiness. This is the human rainbow's happiness now, I'm with her. I choose love.

Simply aching with excitement for January 19th.

Happy mini hiatus and enjoy the journey.

Till then.

  1. I loved this for the most part....such a great analysis and really IMO pretty dead on. These two have the potential for some hot fun! I don't believe it will be forever although not opposed. As you pointed out Arizona deserves some loving! Although I think at this stage....nothing is guaranteed. First we have to get past the Webber/Arizona/Eliza triangle. You forgot one thing: Arizona is fiercely loyal.

Two headstrong attractive intelligent woman who like each other who respect one another...I'm on this ship so hard I hope it doesn't sink with my enthusiasm.

I appreciate the great insight. The only thing I vehemently disagree with us that Callie is Arizona's ending. Callie chose Penny. It's been 4 years as you pointed out and in that time never once did Callie show she remotely wanted Arizona back plus well....to point out the obvious Sara left the show. And Arizona deserves happiness. Callie got her fresh start with a woman she chose to move state with. She's not coming back in 4 years to 8 years later miraculously choose someone she never valued. Let Arizona be happy.
