Not a Regular Day

Calzona Review 11x18 "When I Grow Up"

Last week's episode had like seconds of Callie and none of Arizona.

This week's episode at least gave us more of Callie and a little of Arizona, but that's understandable.

It is an ensemble cast. They all have their turn in terms of screen time.

But watching an episode with no scene of them together is really a challenge to live with. It is bad enough that they are broken up but no scenes together is kind of difficult. Sigh.

Okay enough of the whining. It's Shondaland, and tears are a staple.

Arizona was adorable answering the questions of visiting kids.

And it was endearing how she hit a blank wall in answering a kid's question "difficult" question:

Kid: what's a womb?

Arizona: oh boy

Arizona was usually good with kids but this one question left her blank. It was a light and funny although brief exposure for Arizona but it was cute.

Arizona is enjoying her career, and is learning to live as an individual. Working on being complete by herself and she seems to be having a fun time.

Callie was being the attentive and caring ortho surgeon upon first meeting Officer Dan Pruitt. She was actually impressed that despite the bad way in which his leg was shot, he still had the strength to carry his injured co-worker policeman.

And as he said, he had no choice.

Pruitt was handsome. Dedicated to his comrades. To his job. That was the initial impression of him.

But at first, Callie thought that Pruitt's concern about the condition of the injured 15 yr old suspect in the robbery, was that he was keeping tabs on the kid because he wanted payback and wanted the kid to die.

But slowly, as Callie had further conversations with him, his personality and heart were unraveled. She discovered that this man, this brave cop did not just exude the expected machismo of being a man in uniform.

He displayed heart. He was sensitive. He was altruistic. Not only did he have utmost concern for the welfare of his two co-workers, but he was concerned about the suspect whom he and Brett, had been concerned about. He understood what led to the suspect's actions and even bore witness to what Brett could have done to help and save this suspect. He needed something to be good during that very bad day.

He was mainly responsible for inspiring Brett's mother, a mother from whom two sons had been taken, to donate her son's liver to give to the boy who had killed her sons.

So Callie took this all in. She saw how this man was different. A sensitive, feeling man who relayed how it was the first time he ever fired his gun after 14 years in the service.

A man with deeper character.

Telling Callie that if this was any other day, a regular day, he would be asking her out to dinner, obviously flattered Callie.

First she was surprised. Like she did not know she deserve such admiration, but eventually she seemed to accept it.

She did not say anything final. All she said was he was due to come back to have his leg checked on in ten days, and she did seem to consider his gentle invitation.

Well Callie has been meeting several different people lately. Two men and two women already, and so far, nothing really serious has come out of them except that this man was able to present his personality to Callie in a more in-depth manner. I'm sensing this could go a little further. And a second meeting has been set. And yeah of course as a Calzona diehard fan, I'm not too keen on this, but of course I would go with what makes Callie happy.

Callie is in that stage where she is friends with Arizona. They are there for each other especially when they need each other most

But she is dating. Open to the prospect of new people. As she said two episodes ago.

And yes we were ready for this even if it does pain us. And even if Callie and Dan Pruitt do meet after ten days for that medical check up and then it leads to a real date , then we have to be ready.

It's all part of the process. I'm trying to go back to the start. My initial thoughts after 11x05.

Even back then, I knew and felt they were getting back together but it will have to be a long process. Of self discovery of their own individuality and self growth. Both had to learn to love themselves. Each had to learn to be happy even without the other by her side.

Each had to grow without the other. Each had to nourish herself in order to be the best person she can be, career-wise and even in each one's personal life. In this way, they can grow to be newly revitalized personalities, not bound by limits that had plagued their relationships when various tragedies hit them.

From that wonderful day when "i think you'll know" happened, they had really sweet, tender moments as their relationship progressed.

But some life and career decisions had to be made so their relationship had been tested a few times and this may have created a dent.

Further, various tragedies struck, from the plane crash to the cheating which created more problems for them and their relationship.

Even if the love was there from the beginning, issues that happened to them and between them affected their relationship.

Callie may have felt she gave all of herself and it left her empty. Instead of love being a positive thing, it became something that let her run dry.

Arizona may have felt she was not given a voice on certain things and that may also have had an effect on her.

Nonetheless, all this came to a head and they broke up already and now are both on their personal journey of healing and being whole again.

At present, both are on their own.

Arizona is happy with her career and seems to be fine about her personal life. No love interests (yet) but who knows...

Callie is dating and has been open to potential relationships but so far, nothing serious has caught her eye.

If Officer Pruitt is boyfriend material, then maybe he is the best one for Callie by far.

Maybe he can be someone who can make Callie's fragile heart flutter again.

Callie is on her path to wholeness and if these are the steps to get there, then i welcome it with open arms, even if admittedly, it breaks me to see her with another person, man or woman.

She needs to be her again, to be whole again so let her embrace life and immerse herself in whoever she takes interest in.

Pruitt has no flaws shown so far. And Callie did not say no. I smell potential. So i need to hold my breath.

Meanwhile, Arizona, having gone through the arduous journey during Herman's stint at GSMH, has greatly improved and is back to being the Sparkly Arizona Robbins we know.

For now we can officially say good bye to Season 9 Arizona who was bitter and angry and all that.

We can say that over time, she has slowly healed her deep emotional wounds, has recovered, has successfully gained a new career specialization and has even been gradually being made whole again after being a crucial helping hand to Herman her mentor.

So Arizona's healing process has seen so much progress and we can say it has brought back the old Arizona.

I just don't know if she will date too because so far, she has been buried deep in her wonderful blooming career.

Now it is Callie's turn. Now we focus on Callie's growth and path to healing. Callie should not only be portrayed nor seen as a person only interested in having sex with another person but she deserves to have a real relationship of love and caring.

She felt spent in the aftermath of her marriage. Now she needs to feel not consumed when she loves.

This separation had to happen. And all these things have to happen.

They are both getting used to life without each other but being co-parents to their daughter Sofia, and being friends and confidantes too.

So I'm just hoping that this separation and the experiences that they are going through will lead to full healing for both. And make them whole again.

And in time, make them both realize that no matter what, they are the best for each other.

Six more episodes left for this season. Let's see where the story takes us.

We don't know if we still have a tiny bit of hope of them getting back together this season, but whatever happens, Momma Shonda knows best.

She roots for them, so I am not worried. Ever.

If I need to wait for next season for them to get back together, well then fine. I will just watch their beautiful journey.

Enjoy the journey. Calzona Forever.
